2nd day w/ rental car, off to Hamner Springs

We woke up around 8:30 or 9 from our hotel and didn’t eat breakfast because that is also not included with your stay anywhere (unlike home where you get internet and breakfast). Then showered, packed up our hotel and all that exciting stuff and then we hit the road again and drove to Hamner Springs. We had two buns in the car and a thing of jelly so I just took a piece of paper and wrapped it up and made a homemade knife and spread jelly on a bun and peeled tangerine and we had a half a bun and a tangerine for breakfast.

Then we just drove and drove and took the scenic route again because it is so beautiful. We stopped a few times to snap some photos and take in the beautiful scenery.
I liked the tree in the background :)

Even though it is not as fast as other ways it is way more worth it because this country is breathtaking and it is worth it to take the extra time to do this.

We stopped for lunch in this small town and then drove the rest of the way to Hamner Springs. This town was also so beautiful.
We drove to the information center and got some info on what to do and so we decided that we would go horseback riding.
That was a one hour trip and it was so much fun. It was pretty scary, I don’t remember it being as scary when I rode Shawna’s old horses, but I was a kid and kids are fearless. So we did that for an hour and of course many more breathtaking views. The horse I had was a male and his name was Darcy and Anas’s was a girl horse named Katie. Anas had the boss horse, the mayor if you could :) . The one that was in charge of all of the other horses (there were about 34 altogether). His horse even was grumpy to Darcy. My horse was just a sweet handsome boy and he was so nice. He has one best friend that he always hangs out with but he is friends with all of the other horses also.
Katie (Anas’s horse) tried to tell my horse what to do and since Darcy was in the way Katie got grumpy and got mad at Darcy and snapped at him while we were riding. It was a lot of fun though and we even galloped a little bit and that part was my favorite but it wasn’t my favorite the first time because I was just scared, but then got more comfortable.
After we got done with the horses we went on this little hike up to this view that gave us a 360 degree view of the whole town we were at. It was beautiful but we wanted to keep walking so we didn’t stay there for long. Then we left and went back down and snuck on to a different trail and followed that until it came to an end then turned around and walked back. It didn’t really matter what we did because no matter what, it would not be a letdown. Everything was so perfect and this country is so beautiful. It reminds me so much of Montana only no Bears, no Mountain Lions, NO SNAKES, no wolves. Pretty much the only wildlife is birds and rabbits. Also in New Zealand there are only a few spiders and they are very rare. This is so crazy to me because this country seems like it should be “bear country” but it’s not. So I guess nobody has to worry about me getting eaten by a bear : ). So we just walked for a long time and then we went to the store and got jackets because it was so cold and I didn’t bring warm clothes to Australia because I am living on the SUNSHINE coast. There was snow in Hamner Springs a week ago and this town is a ski bum town! It is just so fun and beautiful here and lots of mountains and it’s like a little mini Missoula. There is a big huge green river running through the town and they do rafting tours but the waves never get really big. I guess I can compare it to the Bitterroot in Missoula.
So after we did all of this we grabbed a bite to eat and headed to the springs. It was a really nice little resort swimming area with lots of different hot springs and a waterslides. It was a lot of fun so we just stayed there for about 2 hours and then went to our hostel and went to bed. We rented a movie to watch but we were too tired to watch it so we just went to bed. And that is easy because we don’t have internet to distract us from everything.
Our hostel was really nice and only 28 bucks for each of us. It was so nice and clean and it was just like a hotel only we didn’t have the TV. Oh yeah, and no internet, and no breakfast, haha!
So this was how we spent day two in the South Island of New Zealand. It was such an amazing day and I think the word we said the most was “wow” because that is all we can say this whole trip so far. And it is only day two, the very beginning of our trip!
